movies + books

Lately i bought 2 award-winning DVD movies, Babel and The Last King Of Scotland. Both are serious films. Since Wikipedia has all the synopsis, i guess i don't need to elaborate.

Babel is kind of shocking. (For most Asians i think it would be. It's very much a censored film.) But then, it actually portrays true happenings in our changing surroundings quite vividly.

The Last King of Scotland is a partially true historical event that happened in Uganda. The character of the Scottish doctor was invented though. The way he was tortured in the end of the movie sends shivers up my spine. I couldn't bare to watch it.

Of the two movie, i think i prefer Babel. Its the kind of movie where you have to watch it from the beginning to the end in order to piece every puzzle. (Reminds me of the way De Javu movie was created.)

I did a bit of reading as well. I finished Eragon the book. (I didn't watch the movie.) Much to my frustration i realized the book wasn't finish. I had to go and buy the rest of the series then. I just hate it when the story turns out to be a cliffhanger, just when it was about to get interesting!! *pout*

For now, I'll make do with Sergei Lukyanenko's The Day Watch. By the way, his other book, The Night Watch was quite good. Its filled with sorcerer's, vampires and werewolves. Two kinds of agencies exist to 'balance' the human realm; the Day Watch(devils of the Dark) and the Night Watch(angels of the Light). Both agencies watch over magical people closely so the 'law' is not violated. Besides being able to yield power, they're actually quite 'human' because they feel just like us, which makes it all the more interesting. Imagine an angel who thirsts for power and eventually turns into devil. =P
