hot summer in Taiwan: day 2

Friday, August 10, 2007

Today we set off for Taichung, one of the big cities in Taiwan. Dad brought the family to visit his old friend from University. His friend's father, Wang Shui He, actively participated in many building and advertisement designs years ago. Now he is retired and spends his days, painting and sculpting. He brought us around his 8-storey building to see his painting and sculptures. Here, the family lives and work together.

I do not know much of dad's friends. But this old man struck me as how determined and lively he is. He may be 80 years old already, but even after a surgery to remove his throat tumor, he is still actively painting. Whenever he talks, his voice sounded deflated. When he needs to talk louder, he takes out a special pipe, presses it against his throat and speak. The voice then reminded me of someone listening to music while underwater.

Then, dinner was yummilicious japanese steamboat. *slurp* This famous Chu Shao restaurant in Taichung has its pot made in the shape of a hoe. Then, when they remove it, they push in a wooden stick at one corner to lift it up. Cute idea! (please don't ask me why this pot is not in the shape of the hoe, this is from a blog resource i found online)

That night, My uncle taught me a new way to enjoy my beef slices---dip it in raw egg. I was skeptic at first, but i decided to try it out myself. So i grabbed an egg, cracked it into the bowl and stirred it with chopsticks. Then, its ready for testing. And guess what? It was DELICIOUS!! i felt so surprised, because i never really liked raw or half-boiled eggs, but this beef and egg combination tasted heavenly. And dessert? Green tea ice cream. Oh yes babe!!

*Most photos are from this blog: 小丸日记 It describes the place vividly.
